What’s the Real Story?

I was born and spent most of my childhood in Las Vegas, Nev., which means that growing up around all that fake glitter and excess left me a little bit jaded, unable to be shocked by much, and with a dark sense of humor that some people find offensive.

We transplanted to Salida, Colorado when I was thirteen. Now, THAT was a shock. My mother and step-father bought a motel and told me that shoveling snow and cleaning motel rooms would keep me out of trouble. Working the front desk, I met lots of interesting people from all over the United States and began to see how even very different people can want the same things. I also learned the meaning and value of a hard day’s work.

My first job out of college was working for an independent newspaper in Boulder, Colo., and one of my first assignments was covering the JonBenet Ramsey murder investigation. I also got to interview Jesse Jackson, Ralph Nader, Sarah McLachlan, and two stoner kids from the University of Colorado who had just created a television series called South Park. Competing for stories with writers from Newsweek pushed me not just to write better stories, but also taught me how to be resourceful, two things that have served me well throughout my career.

In addition to doing the best work I can for my clients, I like to dream up ways to inspire and motivate people to take care of our friend the Earth, as well as each other. I am curious about everything, but I am passionate about politics, music, books, and my family. I am an easy person to get along with – just show up with a good bottle of red wine and some mint chocolate chip ice cream and I will be your loyal companion.

I spend way more time on the internet than I’d care to admit, but I still manage to get outside when the weather is nice and spend time with my husband, our two young children and our dog. I like to run, bike, hike, ski, practice yoga, and sing, but I confess to being average at all of them. I firmly believe that any day spent outside is a good day.
